The Year In Review

Hello Friends,

As we sit back and review the past year, it has been great for Interages!  We accomplished so much and provided positive outcomes for students, volunteers, and frail and elderly adults residing in Montgomery County.  Here is a summary of our accomplishments and special thanks to all the people and organizations that are responsible for our success:

  • Excellent participation for 07-08: This year Interages had 188 volunteers touching the lives of over 650 students in Montgomery County.  We also provided interactive programs for students with 250 frail and elderly adults in nursing homes and adult day care centers.

  • Our programs would not be successful without the support of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services; Montgomery County Public Schools; and the financial contributions of many foundations, corporate sponsors, and individual donors.

  • We celebrated the time, energy, inspiration, and wisdom of our generous volunteers with a June breakfast at  Timpano’s Restaurant.  Nancy Navarro, President of the Montgomery County School Board commended Interages’ volunteers and their commitment to the schools.  Chuck Short, Special Assistant to the County Executive, and Interages’ Board President, Michael Sorrells were both on hand to thank each volunteer.  The Watkins Mill High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Walter Riley, entertained our guests.

  • Interages was named as one of the “Best Small Charities” in the Washington, DC region for 2007-2008 by the Catalogue for Philanthropy.

  • We received an “Award of Excellence in Older Volunteer Program Management” from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, (n4a) and the MetLife Foundation.

  • Interages added four new members to our Board of Directors and one new Advisory Board member.

  • We launched our new website and we produced a new brochure.

  • Our “Night at the Movies” at the AFI Silver Theater in April was a huge success.  We were delighted to have Catherine Leggett as our Honorary Chairperson and Kyle Osborne as our emcee.  Our AFI event would not have been possible without the generous support of Danya International, Inc., Freddie Mac, and the Gazette Newspapers!  Thank you also to the many vendors who donated silent auction items and to the Interages Board of Directors and staff for all their hard work.  Thank you all!

  • Board members Austin Heyman and Odessa Shannon were inducted into the Montgomery County Human Rights Hall of Fame.

  • The Montgomery County Intergenerational Resource Center held five meetings that were informative and well attended by community leaders interested in intergenerational programming.

  • Larry Hartnett received the 2008 Margaret Cutler Award in honor of his outstanding leadership in supporting intergenerational programs in Montgomery County.

  • Interages was showcased at the Bethesda Big Train Baseball Game on June 12th.  Interages President, Michael Sorrels, had the honor of throwing out the first pitch.

  • The Montgomery County Council awarded Interages funding to expand our Intergenerational Bridges Program for the 2009 Fiscal Year.  We are deeply appreciative of this award, especially in a year of fiscal belt-tightening, and we look forward to helping even more students this coming school year.

  • Global Wizards hired a program assistant and expanded into six new schools. We started two pilot programs this year:  Mature Mentors and Grand Buddies. Dialogues Across the Ages added a new site this spring.  This summer we will collaborate with the Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition to provide one on one adult tutors for children whose families are recovering from a period of homelessness.  The schedule is very flexible and evening hours and weekends are available as well as during the workday.  If you are interested in volunteering for this new summer program or any other Interages programs, please contact Sara Cartmill at 301-949-3551, x19 or cartmill@interagesmd.org

Finally, a special thank you to our incredible staff:  Sandra Ames, Patricia Braxton, Sara Cartmill, Ann Kennedy, Kristal Kindrick, Mary Ann Larkin, Sara Lovinger, Louisa Magzanian, and Jeanne Reilly. You provide the expertise, understanding and knowledge to do your jobs with great passion and excellence.

Thank you so very much to all of our contributors.  Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing summer!

Warmest Regards,
Carol Croll
